Joseph Battell advertisements for Ellen, or, The whisperings of an old pine, 1901-1911.

The collection consists of seventeen items, representing four different advertisements for Battell's novel, Ellen, or, The Whisperings of an Old Pine, originally published 1901. Includes one copy of a folder subtitled, A philosophical novel, with a lengthy textual description of the novel; five copies of a columnar publisher's notice with a brief description of the work and its availability; eight copies of a broadside headed "Just published" that briefly describes the contents and appearance of the novel; three broadsides in the form of a letter from Battell to "the President and Professor of Physics of each University and College in the United States," describing an essay on Sound in addition to Ellen and The New Physics, July 1, 1911.

Joseph Battell was an American farmer, author, and politician. Born in Middlebury, Vermont, and educated at Middlebury College, he became editor and publisher of the Middlebury Register, and formed the American Publishing Co. He owned several large farms and the Bread Loaf Inn, and raised Morgan horses. He served eight terms in the Vermont State legislature, as a Republican Representative and Senator.
